The Meteorological Department anticipates a heatwave in Kolkata and several West Bengal districts.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Kolkata has issued a heatwave warning for Kolkata, South and North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Burdwan, Midnapore, and parts of north Bengal between April 12 and 16.

An orange alert has been issued for the districts of south Bengal from April 12 to 16, according to an IMD special bulletin. A heatwave is extremely likely to prevail.

A yellow alert has been issued for north Bengal, with the exception of hilly areas. The weather will be hot and uncomfortable throughout this time period.

Over the region, a mostly dry westerly or northwesterly wind prevails. According to the official bulletin, meteorological conditions indicate that the maximum temperature is anticipated to climb (gradually) by 2–3 °C.

“The temperature in Kolkata is likely to reach around 42°C on April 15,” Sanjeev Banerjee, deputy director-general of the Indian Meteorological Department in Alipore, said this afternoon. People are recommended to take the necessary precautions in preparation for the expected heatwave.”

The following are some of the potential consequences of the heat wave:

  • A heatwave is highly likely.
  • The heatwave is of mild concern to the general public, but it is a major health risk for vulnerable persons such as newborns, the elderly, people with chronic ailments, and people who have been exposed to the sun for an extended amount of time or who do heavy work.
  • Heat cramps and heat rash are likely.
  • Vegetable plants are very likely to dry out.
  • Heat stress is a real possibility for livestock.
